Frequently Asked Questions about Transplant
Rejection occurs when your immune system recognizes your new organ as a foreign invader and attacks. The medications you take after your transplant are designed to prevent organ rejection. It’s important to note that not taking medications as prescribed is one of the most common reasons for transplant failure.
As time passes after your transplant, your medication dosage may change. However, you will need to be on anti-rejection medications for the rest of your life. Transplant recipients also need to follow up with their healthcare team often.
Transplant recipients are most vulnerable for infection right after surgery. In general, it’s best to avoid traveling, crowded areas and anybody who may be sick. Tell your doctor if you think you have an infection.
Most patients experience the highest level of side effects right after their transplant, when medication doses are high. The side effects may decrease as your dosage is lowered. Possible side effects include:
- Headache
- Infection prone
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Swelling
- Osteoporosis
- Skin cancer
- Acne
- Eye problems
Medication can affect each patient differently. Amber Pharmacy works with patients to help manage any side effects that occur. It’s important to discuss any side effects that you experience with your pharmacist or doctor early.
