Thank a Pharmacist this October

October is American Pharmacists Month and it’s the perfect time to thank pharmacists for all they do. You may not realize it, but pharmacists do so much more than count pills for patients.

Pharmacists focus most of their time and energy on ensuring patients receive safe and effective drug therapy. They counsel patients on the proper use of medications, including medications that are over-the-counter, and can educate you on how to manage side effects. They can provide information on smoking cessation and offer services such as immunizations. Sharing any health or medication concerns you have with your pharmacist could even prevent a trip to the hospital. Pharmacists also carefully consider the relationship between your health conditions, lifestyle and medications.

Pharmacists can be one of your best advocates – and I have seen that firsthand at Amber Specialty Pharmacy. I am lucky enough to work with a dedicated team of extremely smart and passionate pharmacists on a daily basis.

The pharmacists on our team work with patients who need special care and attention due to the nature of their complex conditions and medication regimens. I’m proud to say that our team is always mindful of what is best for our patients. We take the time to listen to patient concerns and advocate for them whenever they need it.

Micaila Ruiz is the chief pharmacy officer at Amber Specialty Pharmacy, where she previously had the role of vice president of pharmacy operations. Before joining Amber Specialty Pharmacy, Micaila worked at Hy-Vee as a retail pharmacy supervisor based in Kansas City. She received her Pharm.D. from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2001. In her free time, Micaila enjoys spending time with her family and cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs.
